On September 23, 2022, the WADA Executive Committee approved the new 2023 Prohibited List, which came into effect as of January 2023. WADA has published a Summary of Major Modifications to the 2023 List. Of particular note are WADA's position on Tramadol and Cannabis:
Tramadol (an opioid) has been added to the Prohibited List as banned in-competition, but only effective January 1, 2024. The one-year delay in implementation is to ensure that athletes and their training and medical staff have the proper opportunity to prepare for the drug's new prohibition. Tramadol is a controlled substance in many jurisdictions due to its associated addiction, physical dependence and overdose risks. WADA-funded studies suggest that it has the potential to enhance sporting performance.
THC's status on the Prohibited List remains unchanged, despite calls from multiple stakeholders to review and change the substance's category. WADA's Expert Advisory Group considers that the use of cannabis continues to present a risk to health and remains against the spirt of sport, such that it meets the criteria to be included on the List. THC will remain prohibited only in competition and above a threshold of 150 ng/mL.
