On June 19, 2022, World Aquatics (formerly ”FINA”) announced a new “gender inclusion” policy aimed at determining the eligibility of athletes in the male and female categories of their sport.

The new rules place strict eligibility restrictions on trans women athletes and women athletes with sex variations (DSD) who wish to compete in the female category in international competitions.
