Sandeep combines technical legal expertise, practicality, and strategic risk management to solve complex legal and business problems. He draws on his unique experience having practiced as both external and internal counsel to offer pragmatic and results-oriented solutions to his clients.
Sandeep is a partner at Tyr LLP and head of the firm’s Investigations and Regulatory Defence Group.
He is an accomplished investigations, regulatory defence, litigation, and crisis response lawyer. Before joining Tyr, he practiced in the national litigation departments at Torys LLP and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. He has also held senior leadership roles in BMO Financial Group’s Legal & Regulatory Compliance group, including most recently in overseeing a team of more than 30 professionals responsible for conducting significant internal and external investigations.
Sandeep is highly skilled at handling a wide range of business-critical situations, with a particular focus on internal and regulatory investigations as well as regulatory compliance and defence. He also has significant experience in class actions, competition and antitrust issues, corporate and securities disputes, privacy and data breach situations, product liability claims, and commercial litigation.
Sandeep is licensed in both Ontario and Alberta and has litigated cases before the Courts of both provinces as well as before the Federal Court of Canada, the B.C. Supreme Court and numerous administrative tribunals, including the Competition Bureau, provincial securities commissions, the Mutual Fund Dealers’ Association, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
Sandeep regularly speaks on issues related to investigations, regulatory defence, and class actions. In 2019, he was named a Lexpert Rising Star: Leading Lawyers Under 40.
Advised Bayer Inc. and related companies as national, coordinating, and local counsel in the defence of a number of proposed product liability class actions.
BMW Canada Inc.
Represented BMW Canada Inc. and related companies in a number of product liability claims.
Canadian Natural Resources Limited
Acted as counsel for Canadian Natural Resources Limited in a commercial dispute regarding interests and obligations associated with the multi-billion dollar Horizon Oil Sands operation.
ConocoPhillips Canada Resources Corp.
Successfully represented ConocoPhillips Canada Resources Corp. in a multi-billion dollar "fast-track", arbitration matter involving a contractual dispute.
Represented Groupon Inc. in the defence of a statutory consumer protection class action.
Imperial Tobacco Canada
Represented Imperial Tobacco Company in the defence of a multi-billion dollar product liability claim for the recovery of health care costs.
Iovate Health Sciences Inc.
Acted as counsel for Iovate Health Sciences Inc. and related companies in the defence of: (i) a proposed product liability class action; and (ii) conspiracy, pricing, and advertising claims under the Competition Act.
Magna Closures Inc.
Represented Magna Closures Inc. and its chief executive in the defence of: (i) a complex claim related to contractual/commercial issues, confidential information, and intellectual property; and (ii) a claim involving the termination of a supply agreement and the return of associated commercial property.
Manufacturers Life Insurance Company
Acted as counsel for Manulife in the successful defence, at trial, of a class action related to demutualization.
Represented Pfizer Inc. and related companies in the defence of a number of product liability claims related to is pharmaceutical and animal health products.
Acted as counsel for Rockstar Inc. in the defence of a proposed product liability class action.
Rogers Communications Inc.
Defended Rogers Communications Inc. in several breach of contract and tort claims.
Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada
Represented Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in a proposed class action regarding complex contractual and statutory interpretation questions that was successfully defended in two novel test cases.
Ticketmaster Entertainment, Inc.
Defended Ticketmaster Entertainment, Inc. and related companies in proposed class actions involving allegations of civil conspiracy and unjust enrichment.
Acted as counsel for United Airlines and related companies in the defence of proposed class actions alleging price-fixing under the Competition Act.
BMO Financial Group
Lead counsel responsible for: (i) conducting internal investigations into complex, business-critical issues and managing related crises, including: (a) the largest cybersecurity and privacy incident in Canadian financial services history; and (b) unprecedented, concurrent regulatory investigations into sales practices and employee misconduct; (ii) overseeing a team of 30 investigative professionals responsible for investigating significant alleged internal and external misconduct involving criminal, civil, regulatory, and reputation risk, while also focusing on prevention, mitigation, and remediation; (iii) interacting with, and responding to regulatory investigations and related proceedings commenced by, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, provincial securities commissions, the Mutual Fund Dealers’ Association, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions.

Represented Brewers Retail Inc. in the defence of charges laid under the Ontario Provincial Offences Act.
Confidential Automotive Parts Manufacturing Company
Defended automotive parts company in a bid-rigging investigation under the Competition Act.
Confidential Building Materials Company
Acted as counsel for a building materials company in a price-fixing investigation under the Competition Act.
Confidential Corporate Executives
Acted as counsel for multiple financial services executives in responding to allegations of: (i) insider trading; or (ii) material misrepresentations under provincial securities laws.
Confidential Cosmetics Company
Conducted an internal investigation for a cosmetics company into allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
Confidential Electronics Company
Acted as counsel for a global electronics company in a bid-rigging investigation under the Competition Act and the defence of a related proposed class action alleging breaches of the Competition Act.
Energy Services Company
Conducted an internal investigation for an energy services company regarding stock option practices and acted as counsel in defending related proceedings.
Energy Waste Services Company
Acted as counsel for an energy waste services company in an abuse of dominance investigation under the Competition Act.
Health & Fitness Company
Acted as counsel for a health & fitness club in responding to a search warrant and a misleading advertising investigation under the Competition Act.
Maritime Shipping Company
Represented a company responding to a search warrant and a price-fixing investigation under the Competition Act.
Real Estate Asset Management Company
Represented a global real estate asset management company in addressing regulatory issues under provincial securities laws.
Ticketing & Marketing Company
Acted as counsel for a ticketing & marketing company in a misleading advertising investigation under the Competition Act.
Represented various companies in responding to production orders and requests for information issued by regulators, including the execution of search warrants issued under section 11 of the Competition Act.
